Cavit

PHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECT:

Pharmacodynamics:The combination of calcium carbonate and vitamin D3 is very widely used. This combination is a dietary supplement which restores and prevents the lack of calcium and vitamin D. Vitamin D3 helps to the absorption of calcium from the intestine and to restore its deficiency. Vitamin D3 also assists in accumulation of the phosphorus. Cavit is required for malnutrition and for the lack of sunlight, and for the failure of vitamin D3’s activation in the kidneys. Calcium is an essential element for the muscular system, musculoskeletal system, the base for cell membranes and for impassibility of capillaries. Calcium plays an active role in the development of the skeletal system, in transmission of nerve impulses prior to the conduction of impulses in the myocardium, in muscle contraction and blood coagulation.

Pharmacokinetics:Cavit is used orally. After oral use the absorption of the medicine depends on the calcium salt, the dose, gastric acidity and the amount of active vitamin D.

Calcium carbonate (CaSO3)

Absorption: under the acidic conditions of the stomach the calcium carbonate is collapsed into the calcium ions (Ca2 +). Calcium ions are absorbed in the proximal place of the small intestine. 30% of the dose is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract.

Elimination: Calcium is ouput through sweat and gastrointestinal secret. Excretion of calcium through the kidneys depends on glomerular filtration and tubular reabsorption of calcium.

Vitamin D3: Vitamin D3 is absorbed in the intestine and being bound with the proteins is transported then into the liver (first hydroxylation) and then into the kidneys. Unhydroxylated vitamin D3 is deposited in the muscles and in the subcutaneous tissue. Its half-excretion period is several days, derived mainly through the kidneys and feces. The effect is observed after 10-24 hours and the maximum concentration observed on the 4th week. The half-excretion period is 19-48 hours. Passes into the breast milk, derived though urine and feces.
